Company History

Internet2 was founded in 1996 when 34 university leaders came together to create a high-performance network dedicated to advancing research and education after the commercialization of the internet reduced the speed and reliability researchers had previously enjoyed. Building on the legacy of NSFNET, Internet2 became a member-driven organization focused on providing advanced networking capabilities for higher education, research institutions, government affiliates, and industry partners around the world.

Today, Internet2 connects hundreds of universities and organizations globally, supporting large-scale scientific collaboration, data sharing, and research projects. Beyond providing a fast and reliable network, Internet2 emphasizes collaboration, cybersecurity, trust, and identity management, enabling researchers to securely access computing resources and data across institutions worldwide.

Looking ahead, Internet2 continues to invest in next-generation networking infrastructure to support increasingly data-intensive research and emerging technologies, ensuring the research and education community remains connected and prepared for future scientific discoveries.
